One of the things I truly admire about our testers and the Advisors Circle is the boundless creativity they bring to our sewing patterns. This latest roundup certainly lives up to expectations. Four of our advisors took on the new Fire Dress + Top pattern and shared their experiences. If you're looking for inspiration, pull up a chair and take a look.
Asmita had this to say:
When I first laid eyes on the Fira pattern, I instantly knew I wanted to work with the red slub cotton in my stash, paired with some contrasting fabric for the yoke facings. For the top, I went with a size 2 at the bust (A/B cup size), grading it out to a 4 at the hips. Figuring out the right length was a bit tricky, and after a few attempts, I finally decided to shorten it by 2 inches to achieve the look I was going for (I’m 5’4â€).
Other tweaks included lowering the bust dart by 1 inch, adding a forward shoulder adjustment of 1/2 inch, and making a minor swayback adjustment. I think this type of top offers plenty of opportunities for personalization, and I chose to add a touch of embroidery where the front yoke meets the front panel. To be honest, it took several muslins before I landed on a fit I loved. But now, this top feels like an old friend—something I reach for often!
Erica chimed in with her thoughts:
The Fira dress came together effortlessly and fit just as anticipated. Normally, I go for a size 6 in the shoulders and adjust down to a 4 in the bodice, but this time around, I decided to stick with a straight size 6 in my usual C cup, knowing I wanted this version to be a lightweight linen summer dress with plenty of ease for warmer weather. I absolutely adore how the shoulder yoke pieces create such flattering shaping both in the front and back. I can picture myself making this again in a washable wool suiting, layering it over long sleeves during the cooler months. As always, Liesl + Co. manages to strike that perfect balance between tailored and effortless.
Liz added her perspective:
I was really on the hunt for an autumn wardrobe staple top, and I hit the jackpot with a woven, yarn-dyed green fabric from the Entwine by Guicy Giuce/Andover Fabrics range at my local Craft Habit in Raleigh. It features a subtle herringbone-like pattern woven throughout, and the color doesn’t fully translate in photos—it’s more of a beautiful, slightly olive green.
This was one of the first times I pre-made a muslin, and I’m so glad I did since I adjusted the bust darts slightly and shortened the final version by a bit. The Fira is another example of a deceptively simple project with such delightful details. The yoke construction was explained beautifully, coming together in no time at all. It’s an excellent “elevated basic†with lovely touches that I can see myself wearing frequently over the winter with my Melville Cardigan, but it’ll also transition seamlessly into spring.
Mire weighed in with her experience:
When I first saw the Fira top, I envisioned it as a fantastic layering piece for autumn and winter. Picking the right fabric proved challenging—I wanted something warm enough for winter but not too thick or bulky due to the gathering. Eventually, I dug out some men’s wool suiting from my stash and gave it a try. While my fabric choice wasn’t ideal, the top still turned out beautifully. I’m definitely planning to revisit this pattern in linen for summer.
