the advisors circle sews the fira dress + top

One thing I truly appreciate about our testers and the Advisors Circle is the boundless creativity they bring to our sewing patterns. This collection of projects is nothing short of inspiring. Four of our advisors took on the new Fire Dress + Top pattern and shared their personal experiences. So grab a seat and get ready to soak up some inspiration. ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/d9b5b5a2b61f7333b3b0356661433498.jpg) Asmita shared her thoughts: When I first laid eyes on the Fira pattern, I knew instantly that I wanted to use my red slub cotton from my stash paired with some contrasting fabric for the yoke facings. For the top, I made a size 2 at the bust (A/B cup size), then graded it out to a size 4 at the hips. Figuring out the length was a bit tricky, requiring a couple of attempts, but eventually, I decided to shorten it by 2 inches to achieve the desired length (I’m 5’4”). Other adjustments included lowering the bust dart by 1 inch, a forward shoulder adjustment of 1/2 inch, and a minor swayback adjustment. I believe this type of top offers many opportunities for embellishment, and I chose to add a few stitches where the front yoke meets the front panel. To be honest, I went through several muslins before achieving a fit I was happy with. However, as a result, the top already feels like an old friend that I love to wear! ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/9ae53509351bc982965ae3a0f4020671.jpg) Erica chimed in: The Fira dress comes together effortlessly and fits exactly as anticipated. Normally, I'd go with a size 6 in the shoulders and grade down to a 4 in the bodice. This time, though, I opted for a straight size 6 in my usual C cup, since I wanted this version in lightweight linen to be a comfortable summer dress with enough ease for warmer weather. I especially adore how the shoulder yoke pieces shape the garment in both the front and back. I can picture myself making this next in a washable wool suiting and layering it over long sleeves during cooler months. In true Liesl + Co. fashion, it feels tailored yet effortless. ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/0b99bf51e6974b9ad538867f39bed485.jpg) Liz added: I was really after an autumn wardrobe staple top. I hit the jackpot with the perfect fabric at my local Craft Habit in Raleigh: a woven, yarn-dyed green from the Entwine by Guicy Giuce/Andover Fabrics range. It has a subtle plaid woven into it, and the color doesn’t do it justice in photos—it's a beautiful, slightly olive green. This was one of the first times I made a muslin beforehand, and I’m so glad I did, as I adjusted the bust darts slightly and took a bit off the length for the final version. The Fira is another example of something that looks deceptively simple but has such lovely details. The yoke construction was incredibly well-explained and came together in no time. It’s a fantastic "elevated basic" top with beautiful details. I can see myself wearing it a lot over the winter with my Melville Cardigan, but it’ll also work well into spring. ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/02b984440b30b4ae52a4d82026416624.jpg) Mire weighed in: When I first saw the Fira top, I thought it would make a great layering piece for autumn and winter. Choosing the right fabric proved challenging—because of the gathering, I wanted something that wasn't too thick or bulky, but I still wanted a warm top for winter. I dug into my stash and found some men's wool suiting, which I decided to use. While my fabric choice wasn’t ideal, the top turned out beautifully. I’m definitely going to revisit this pattern in linen for summer. Are you ready to give this pattern a try? Which version will you choose? ![](https://via.placeholder.com/150x150) It’s always exciting to see how different fabrics and personal touches transform a pattern into something uniquely yours. Whether you’re aiming for a casual summer dress or a cozy winter layer, the Fira offers endless possibilities. Happy sewing!
