Welcome to the Oliver + S blog, everyone! Today we’re thrilled to introduce Marte from Belgium, who’s here to share some of the stunning Roller Skate dresses she's crafted over the years. Thank you so much for joining us, Marte!

Hi there! I’m Marte, and it’s such an honor to be here with all of you. If you’re looking for a glimpse into my sewing journey, head over to my blog, Compagnie M. While I design my own patterns, I also enjoy trying out designs from other talented independent creators. Among all the patterns I’ve worked with, the Roller Skate dress has been my absolute favorite since I began sewing about seven years ago.
Let’s dive right in with my very first Roller Skate dress. This one was truly special—so much so that I went all-out with details like the elegant collar and a delicate bow. If I ever find this fabric again, I’d definitely recreate this dress. I’m confident it would still look fantastic on my girls.
As you might have guessed, my girls are twins, which means they share a single wardrobe. They may be identical, but their personalities couldn’t be more different! When making my second Roller Skate dress, I envisioned it as Nore’s birthday dress for her fourth birthday. I kept things simple and classic, choosing a fabric that was simply too beautiful to overshadow. A single vintage-style button from my collection was all I needed to finish it off. Matching the print at the back was tricky, but I think I pulled it off quite nicely.
Now let’s talk about my third Roller Skate dress. From the very beginning, I knew I wanted a vintage-inspired look. I found the perfect fabric and decided to use it twice—once for the outer layer and again for the lining. I have a soft spot for unique linings, and this version certainly delivered.

Fast forward to last week, and I think I’ve created my ultimate Roller Skate dress yet. It all started at a fabric design workshop where I spotted a breathtaking dress from a high-end French brand. Unfortunately, it was beyond my budget, so I decided to create my own version instead. Using Illustrator, I replicated the fabric design (for personal use only) and had it printed by Spoonflower. Their new German facility has made shipping to Belgium much more affordable, and I couldn’t be happier. The fabric features a bold print, which meant I had to be strategic with how I used it. Fortunately, the Oliver + S pattern’s built-in cap sleeves saved the day—they eliminated the need for separate sleeves, preserving the integrity of the print. We’re absolutely thrilled with the results, and I’m counting down the days until summer arrives!

I hope I’ve convinced you to give this pattern a try—it’s truly amazing. And just to be clear, I’m not writing this solely because I received permission to post here. I’ve already shared my thoughts on my own blog multiple times, so here’s a quick recap:
The Roller Skate dress is incredibly easy to sew, which is probably why I adore it so much. Another bonus? The cap sleeves mean you don’t need a ton of fabric. The dress’s length is generous enough, and it works beautifully with all types of fabrics. When working with prints, the Roller Skate dress is my go-to choice. Even though Dresses #2 and #3 were made about two years ago, my girls can still rock them. Thanks to its wide design and elastic chest band, you can extend the life of this dress easily—just swap out the elastic every now and then, and you can wear it as a tunic or add a contrasting hem. It’s a sustainable fashion dream come true. Thank you, Oliver + S, for creating such a timeless and versatile pattern. Keep inspiring us!
